Clinical Study of Neonatal and Infantile Peritonitis

Abstract
This report is a result of clinical study of neonatal and infantile peritonitis in 16 cases and were treated surgically in 12 cases at dept. of surgery in Yonsei Medical Center from January, 1968 to December, 1975.
The incidence of neonatal and infantile peritonitis is very rare but a very grave prognosis if not treated surgically. The used of antibiotics, improved understanding of fluid and elec-trolyte problems, and liberal use of whole blood have changed the prognosis of gastrointinal perforation as compared to 30 years age.
The age incidence of neonatal and infantile peritonitis occur in any age ¢¥but the peak incidence was under the 7days of life in 52.5%.
The ratio of sex incidence was 1.7: 1 in male and female.
The common symptoms are abruptly distention of abdomen, bile-stained vomitus, refusal of food, cyanosis and often diarrhea. On chest and abdominal X-ray, pnemoperitonum and calcified shadows were seen as typical shape.
The most common perforated sites are ileum in 5 cases and stomach in 4 cases as showed in table 4.
The etiologic factors of perforation are as follow:
Idiopathic in 4 cases, associated anomaly in 4 cases, distal obstruction in 6 case s(including associated anomalies), muscular defect of the stomach in 3 cases, trauma history in 2 cases and burn in 1 case.
Motality rate in all cases was in 6 cases (50%).
